A word about our worship:

150 years ago the Rev. Thomas Crossman came to Belmont to establish a daughter church from St. Giles in Durham City (see "History" page) and Jesus Christ has been worshipped regularly in our building ever since.

We are an open evangelical church which also values its rich Eucharistic tradition.

Our styles vary from the Book of Common Prayer (8 am Sundays) to "Café Church" (9.30 - 11.30 am Wednesdays) but our main service of worship is Holy Communion, (Order 1) on Sundays at 9.30 am!

We believe that our children and young people should be able to actively contribute to our worship. We welcome baptised children to the Communion Table before Confirmation after they have received careful teaching so they can understand its meaning. We have a wonderful team of people who lead the children's work on a Sunday morning and every month we have a service all together that is geared to the whole family. We also enjoy a rich and varied musical tradition (led by Gerald and Chris with others.)

We enjoy joint services and social events with friends at St. Laurence, Pittington and every month share in an evening, united service with Carrville Methodist Church. Our other Sunday evening services range from "First Sunday" informal worship, to BCP Evening Prayer with a Bible Study or sermon) and occasional but regular Healing Services.

Our regular mid-week worship includes:

  • Daily Morning Prayer (9.15 am),

  • Holy Communion (Wednesdays at 10 am),

  • Café Church in the Parish Hall (Wednesdays at 9.30 am),

  • "Xpression" (3.30 pm Wednesdays),

  • Four flourishing Fellowship Groups (that meet alternate weeks),

  • Services of Holy Communion for older and disabled people in Residential and private homes and

  • Acts of Collective worship in our local schools.

Our licensed ministerial team includes our clergy (Di and Judith), and Readers (Patrick and Brian). We also enjoy the ministry of our Schools Worker (James) and other much valued lay people and clergy associated with the church family at St. Mary Magdalene's.
